What
You Need To Know About Hockey
Hockey
is a popular game played all over the world. The exact date of its origin
is not known. One belief is that it originated from the English game of
field hockey. When the English came to North America, they realized that
ice is faster than grass and started playing on ice covered ponds. Today,
the term “hockey” in the US is synonymous with ice hockey. The
term “hockey” is derived from the French word ‘hoquet’
meaning ‘shepherds crook’ which is similar in shape to a hockey
stick.
Modern ice
hockey was played for the first time in the United States in 1893. The
game became very popular and in a very short time spread to Great Britain
and other European countries. It is now played in around 30 countries
and mostly in North America, Scandinavia and Russia. It is also the national
game of Canada.
Ice
hockey is played on natural or artificial ice on an oval shaped rink of
61 m by 25.5 m .Two goal nets, each measuring 1.22 m high and 1.83 m wide
are placed at both ends of the rink. Each team consists of six players.
The players are divided into one center, two forwards, two defenders and
one goaltender or goalie. The game is played with wooden or metal sticks
around 152 cm in length. A hard rubber disc called a puck is used to score
goals. The players wear padded clothing and gloves to protect themselves.
The team scoring the most goals wins.
The National
Hockey League was formed in 1917, made up of teams from the United States
and Canada. In the early years, almost all hockey players were from Canada,
but more recently, there has been an upsurge in players from the United
States and European countries, who have started participating in the game.
The Stanley Cup, held annually, is the most famous competition for ice
hockey.
Interest
in ice hockey is on the rise in schools, colleges and universities. More
and more youngsters have started playing the game. The live telecast of
almost all the professional league matches played in United States proves
the popularity of the game, as well.

All About Floor
Hockey
It's pretty tough
to find a game that is more fun than floor hockey, in large part because
it's a fast-paced, exciting sport that can be played by individuals of
all ages and skill sets. Another great thing about floor hockey is that
it can be played virtually anywhere. Unlike many other sports, it is a
necessary to have specialized fields or equipment to play. In fact, the
little equipment that you will need is relatively inexpensive, especially
if you shop online.
The Internet is loaded
with quality sporting goods web sites that offer deep discounts on floor
hockey equipment. Some of these websites may require that you buy multiple
items in order to qualify for the savings. These websites are really great
if you happen to be a gym teacher or coach and floor hockey is a part
of overall physical fitness program. Very often, you have to purchase
a whole set of sticks (usually 12), plus a couple of pucks and perhaps
even one or two goal nets in order to take advantage of the discounts.
So please bear in mind that if you ever need to buy floor hockey equipment
and quantity and do your homework on the Internet, it's well worth it.
There
are of course many websites that offer great floor hockey equipment in
smaller quantities and on an individual basis. If you take your time and
really shop around, you can still get good prices on sticks, pucks, protective
gear, replacement blades, practice accessories, and even goalie equipment
like as masks and pads.
A street version of
floor hockey is becoming more and more popular these days. They were even
playing it in the movie Wayne's World. The outdoor version of the game
is usually a lot faster paced because players often use rollerblades,
thereby making skating and stick handling skills absolutely crucial if
you want to be competitive. The outdoor game requires a little more equipment
and a little higher quality because the game is more intense. Or, you
might want to use so-called low-density balls that are designed not to
bounce. Either way, you can find just about any equipment you will need
at the very same websites that sell regular floor hockey products, the
deals are there and there are plenty of them, just do your homework.
Floor hockey is an
action-packed sport that offers participants a fantastic opportunity to
get some exercise in a fun and competitive environment. It's also one
of the most affordable activities around, so there's really no excuse
not to play!
